The Lattice: Spongy Bone

Tattoo-flash honeycomb, The Lattice, hanging from a branch; pink bony walls hold marrow cells, the bottom rows are thinned and cracked, and bees fly around it.
  • The ends (epiphyses) and core of long bones, inside the compact bone collar
  • Sandwiched inside flat bones between two layers of compact bone (diploë)
  • Wrapped around red bone marrow
  • Trabeculae, curving sheets of lamellae like the trusses of a bridge, run in almost every orientation
  • So they take twisting, pulling, and pushing from all directions, better than compact bone
  • Every strut is thin enough to reach the marrow, so they need no central canals
Histological slide depicts intramembranous ossification. Pink-stained bone matrix is interspersed with numerous small, ovoid lacunae containing osteocytes. Scattered light areas indicate active bone formation. The overall composition shows an irregular network of bone trabeculae characteristic of early bone development. Image captured via light microscope.
Fetal leg, cross section, H&E, 40X (slide 048). New bone forming as struts.
Microscopic slide of intramembranous ossification. The image's central area consists of a teal-stained matrix, speckled with small, red-pink cellular elements, and interspersed with several white empty spaces. A prominent cluster of deep red-brown cells appears in the lower central area. The left margin shows another cluster of cells separated by the material stained teal-green. Bone tissue appears granular.
Fetal leg, Masson stain, 40X (slide 048b).
Microscopy image of bone marrow. The overall appearance is of a random distribution of sizes and shapes. Adipocytes (white circles) contrast sharply against the red/pink background of the hematopoietic cells. Cell staining varies in intensity, creating texture and depth. Bright red cells add focal points within field.
Bone marrow (slide 050), filling the spaces between the struts.
Tattoo-flash skull, Captain Concrete, filled with pink osteons; its eyes are two large osteons with the central canal as the pupil, and copper pipes feed it, one clamped shut.
Tattoo-flash pig, The Vault, filled with pale signet-ring fat cells with purple nuclei pushed to the edge, standing on a strongbox sealed with a gold ring; a tag reading SUPPORT is crossed out.
