Three Muscle Types, One Trigger
This page compares the body’s three muscle types and shows why one disease can disturb all of them. Skeletal muscle is striated and voluntary, moving the body. Cardiac muscle is striated, involuntary, and self-rhythmic — it pumps the heart and never rests. Smooth muscle is non-striated and involuntary, lining the gut, vessels, and other hollow organs to move their contents. They differ in structure and control, but all three contract using calcium as the trigger, and all three are exposed to circulating IL-1β/IL-6.
