Blood Groups & Components

  • ABO blood group: A classification of human blood based on the presence or absence of A and B antigens on red blood cells.
  • Adult hemoglobin (HbA): The predominant hemoglobin in adults, composed of two alpha and two beta chains.
  • Agglutinate: The clumping of cells, particularly red blood cells, due to antigen-antibody reactions.
  • Agglutination: The clumping of red blood cells when antibodies bind to their specific antigens.
  • Agglutinins: Antibodies that cause agglutination by binding to specific antigens.
  • Agglutinogens: Antigens on the surface of red blood cells that determine blood type.
  • Albumin: A plasma protein that helps maintain osmotic pressure and transport substances.

Blood Disorders & Anemia

  • Anemia: A condition characterized by a deficiency of red blood cells or hemoglobin, leading to reduced oxygen transport.
  • Aplastic anemia: A type of anemia caused by failure of bone marrow to produce red blood cells.
  • Hemolytic anemia: Anemia caused by the destruction of red blood cells before their normal lifespan ends.

  • Biliverdin: A green pigment that results from heme breakdown and is converted into bilirubin.

  • Plasma cells: Immune cells that develop from B cells and produce antibodies.

  • Antigens: Molecules on the surface of cells that trigger an immune response.
  • Lymphoid hematopoiesis: The production of lymphocytes in lymphatic tissues.

  • Nitrogenous wastes: Metabolic waste products like urea, creatinine, and uric acid, excreted by the kidneys.

  • Secondary polycythemia: An increase in red blood cells due to factors like low oxygen levels or increased erythropoietin production.

Blood Typing & Transfusion

  • Universal donor: A person with type O blood, which lacks A and B antigens and can be donated to any blood type.
  • Universal recipient: A person with type AB blood, which lacks anti-A and anti-B antibodies, allowing them to receive any blood type.
