A magnified view of ground compact bone reveals its intricate structure. Several osteons, ring-like arrangements of bone tissue, are visible. Each osteon contains a central, dark-appearing canal through which blood vessels and nerves pass. The concentric rings surrounding the central canals give the bone a characteristic pattern.
