The gluteus medius muscle is a fan-shaped muscle located on the lateral aspect of the hip.

Origin

The gluteus medius begins on the outer surface of the ilium. This occurs specifically along the iliac crest. The iliac crest is the upper curved border of the hip bone.

Insertion

The muscle inserts into the greater trochanter of the femur. This is a bony prominence on the upper part of the thigh bone.
