When Stina talks about her diagnosis now, one phrase comes back again and again: “It was written in me the whole time.” There is grief in it, but also a strange relief — the sense that her body had been telling the truth all along, in a language no one around her had learned to read. The Gene Finally Speaks
Transcription is how a gene speaks. A Misprint, Photocopied Without Comment
When MEFV is transcribed, the typo is copied faithfully into the mRNA as well. The error is not caught, not flagged, not corrected; it is simply relayed onward, like a misprint photocopied without comment. For Stina, this is the literal sense in which her disease was “written in” her: a flawed instruction transcribed into a working message and sent off to be built, over and over, across her entire life. The body was not malfunctioning. It was reading aloud, with perfect diction, a sentence that happened to contain one wrong word.

An Actively Expressed Disease
The MEFV recipe stays in the nucleus, but the cell makes a working mRNA copy — typo included — and acts on it, fever after fever.
