Why ‘nonspecific’ was the wrong word
Nonspecific means this finding does not by itself name a disease. It does not mean the finding is unimportant, and it is not a licence to stop asking what produced it.
Age-excessive white-matter hyperintensities in a patient with years of measurably elevated IL-1β and IL-6 are not floating free of the rest of the chart. Chronic cytokine exposure alters barrier permeability, and myelin is what pays for it.
