The plate

The specimen, drawn

Pl. VII

Colored-pencil field-guide plate: the same pufferfish drawn twice — at left a torpedo-shaped fish with pleated skin and spines lying flat, labelled EMPTY, and at right a sphere with spines standing out, labelled FULL, with an arrow between them reading water in. Inset a shows two squares of skin, pleated then pulled smooth; inset b shows the lining dome-topped and three layers deep when empty, flattened into two when full — transitional epithelium.

The tissue as you will meet it on the slide.

Range

  • Renal calyces and pelvis
  • Ureters
  • Bladder
  • Upper urethra — and nowhere else

Niche

What it does for a living

Changing shape without changing number. It accommodates volume and keeps urine out of the tissue underneath while doing it — the tightest barrier in the body.

How to know it on sight

  • Several layers with a domed, bulging top row when relaxed.
  • Umbrella cells, often binucleate.
  • Stretched, the whole thing flattens and looks like fewer layers.
  • Judge it by location as much as by shape.

Specimen 1

Microscopic view of transitional epithelium, stained pink. The image focuses on the tissue's edge, showcasing the stratified cell structure. The top layer shows rounded, dome-shaped cells. At the bottom, the co

Specimen 2

High-magnification microscopic image of transitional epithelium, stained pink. The tissue appears as a curving structure against a lighter background. The upper layers show densely packed, rounded cells contras

Specimen 3

Histological slide of transitional epithelium tissue stained pink. The view shows the characteristic multilayered structure, with columnar basal cells transitioning to cuboidal and then large, rounded apical ce

Look-alikes

Three plates. Read the line underneath each one before you decide.

Stratified squamous

Microscopic image of stratified squamous epithelium, vagina, using Masson's trichrome stain. Top has a red superficial layer showing flattened cells with elongated nuclei. Progressing downward, cell layers tran

Tell them apart by the top cells — flat, never domed — and by the organ.

Stratified cuboidal

High-magnification light microscopy image of parotid gland. Stratified cuboidal epithelial cells stain intensely pink/red, outlining glandular ducts. Surrounding stroma appears fibrous with scattered nuclei and

Tell them apart by depth: only two layers.

An over-stretched specimen of itself

High-magnification microscopic image showing a cross-section of an over-extended ureter wall stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E stain). The slide shows the transitional epithelium at the top, multi-layered

Tell them apart by remembering it is the same tissue. Flattened urothelium is not squamous.

Why this animal

A pufferfish is the same fish empty or full; it does not grow, it fills, and the skin takes up the slack.
