14.8 Conclusion and Assessment

MODULE 14 · CONCLUSION & ASSESSMENT

An alarm that never switched off

You now hold blood — plasma, formed elements, erythropoiesis, hemostasis and the acute-phase response. Here we read years of odd, harmless-looking labs as one sustained alarm with a long fuse.

Reactive thrombocytosis is common. Raised inflammatory markers are common. Individually each of Stina’s abnormalities earned a shrug, and collectively they describe an acute-phase response that has been running for decades.

The consequence is not the platelet count. It is serum amyloid A, produced faithfully the whole time, misfolding and depositing in tissue — the slow fuse that surfaces later in her gut and her kidneys.

A REACTIVE LAB

A snapshot to note

One abnormal value at one moment, explained by a passing event and expected to normalise.

A SUSTAINED RESPONSE

A process with a consequence

Years of the same pattern. The number is a proxy for a driver that is doing cumulative damage.

CLUE #14

A response that never switched off. This entry joins the diagnostic timeline the whole course is assembling.

Module 15 — The Heart. Sharp chest pain at 3 a.m. that eased when she leaned forward, a scratchy rub on the stethoscope, and a small effusion on echo. This module builds the heart and reads recurrent pericarditis as FMF serositis wrapping the sac around it. Begin Module 15 →
