Blood is held inside a razor-thin pH window, and during one severe attack Stina felt what happens at its edge. She became badly dehydrated, needed IV fluids, and overheard a resident remark that her blood chemistry was “a little off” before the comment evaporated into the rush of the shift. Nothing came of it. But “a little off” is not a footnote in her story — it is a window into the same chemistry that decides whether a molecule like urate stays safely dissolved or falls out of solution as a crystal, the thread pointing toward the gout that waits later in the course.

The pH scale runs from 0 to 14, and arterial blood is defended within a startlingly narrow band, 7.35 to 7.45, because proteins simply stop working outside it; buffers guard that window by soaking up excess acid or base before it can shift the whole system. Solubility obeys the same chemistry: as a fluid turns more acidic, a weak acid like uric acid becomes less soluble and tips toward forming crystals. Underneath all of it sits water — polar, an exceptional solvent, a heat sponge with high heat capacity, and cohesive enough to climb and hold together.
